SW Aware Monitor with univeral power supply unit

1. Operating Principle

The SW Aware Monitor enables continuous, false alarm-proof real-time monitoring of wristbands.

  • Measurement method: A continuous test voltage of 1.2 V at 1 to 2 µA generates a rectangular signal in the closed circuit of the wristband.
  • Signal evaluation: The monitoring circuit compares the signal shape with reference patterns. This verifies the user's mechanical connection in the circuit and checks whether the DC equivalent resistance is within specifications. Deviations trigger an immediate alarm.

 

2. Standards Compliance and ESD Protection

The use of continuous monitoring optimizes process compliance according to common

  • ESD standards: ANSI/ESD S20.20 (Sec. 7.3): Meets the requirement for creation and retention of compliance records.
  • ANSI/ESD S1.1 (Appendix A.3): Replaces the mandatory daily manual testing of the wristband.
  • ESD TR 20.20 (Sec. 5.3.2.4.4): Recommended or required for high-cost or critical manufacturing processes that require continuous, reliable grounding.

 

3. Software Integration: Static Management Program (SMP)

The SCS SW Aware Monitor integrates directly into the SCS Static Management Program (SMP) for seamless quality assurance:

  • Real-time monitoring: Centralized data collection of all SCS monitoring devices and ionization systems throughout all manufacturing phases.
  • Data logging: Automatic storage of Pass/Fail status (user/work surfaces) in a central SQL database.
  • Quality management: Proactive identification of ESD risk sources and automated reporting to demonstrate ESD protection effectiveness.

SW Aware monitor with universal power supply unit

The SCS SW Aware Monitor is a continuous monitoring device for individual workstations. It continuously monitors the integrity of an operator’s path-to-ground and an ESD work surface. It is ideally suited for installation under tabletops. The SW Aware Monitor eliminates the need for regular inspection and logging of wrist straps.

The SW Aware Monitor uses impedance technology to ensure stable, continuous monitoring of the path-to-ground and the 1-megohm resistance in the operator’s wrist strap. Audible and visual alarms are triggered (in less than 50 milliseconds) if the operator unintentionally disconnects from the monitor or if there are interruptions in the wrist strap’s connection points. In addition, the SW Aware Monitor monitors whether the grounding path of the work surface is less than 10 megohms.
